WORSHIP & MUSIC AUGUST NEWSLETTER 2017

On the mountains, I still bow my life

To the One who set me there.

In the valley, I will lift my eyes

To the One who sees me there.

When I’m standing on the mountain-

I didn’t get there on my own,

When I’m walking through the valley-

I know I am not alone.

You’re God of the hills and valleys

And I am not alone.

Tauren Wells, Hills and Valleys, CCLI Song No. 7060141

Do you have a song that comes to mind both in times of happiness and despair? One that lifts your spirits when you need to be reminded that God is always there and you are not alone? Tauren Wells latest song, Hills and Valleys, helped to get me through Paul’s emergency surgery, recovery, and rehabilitation during June and July. These words served me well as a constant reminder of God’s presence through it all. Thank goodness also for the presence of many loyal and diligent musicians, worship assistants and volunteers who assisted me and carried on with our ministries during Paul’s hospitalization. From rehearsals to Sunday morning worships and even VBS - they truly did not miss a beat!

Many thanks to Pastor Eileen and all of you who supported our family in prayer and positive thoughts during Paul’s surgery and continued recovery. We are singing God’s praises from our mountain top! All is well and Paul continues to grow stronger each day!

Now for some upcoming news for the SALC Music groups…

Heaven’s Bells will return from their summer break beginning on Wednesday, August 9th. Our group meets at 11:30 am to visit before the 1:00 pm rehearsals. The Alleluia Choir returns on Monday, August 21st at 7 pm. We will rehearse and also preview this year’s Christmas Cantata. As I recently reviewed some of my files from the past, I noticed a quote that was sent to me. It went like this-“Music is what feelings sound like.” That statement really hit home! If you ever watch our musicians closely as they share their musical gifts, you will see the feelings of love, devotion, and pure praise displayed. I can guarantee that participating in one of our groups will be an instant “mood elevator”. Now may just be the perfect time to join us!

Our combined Musical VBS with Shepherd King in June was a successful experience. Thanks to the many volunteers from both churches, the children were treated to a greatweek of food & fellowship, arts & crafts, the story of Noah, and music, music, music.  The presentation of A Technicolor Promise was spectacular and showcased the talents of our youth. Rumors are that 2 certain pastors even joined the crew as a pink flamingo and a porcupine!  If you missed the chance to be there, several videos were made and hopefully, they can be available for interested parties.

I know the temperatures are setting new record highs lately in San Antonio, but did you realize that in less than 22 weeks we will be celebrating Christmas? Actually for music directors, the realization that Advent & Christmas are just around the corner has already happened. The vocalists and musicians of St Andrew, Shepherd King, and Ebenezer Lutheran will be joining together this year to present Russell Mauldin’s O Little Town of Bethlehem. Rehearsals will be held at each church’s own regular Choir rehearsal times with several combined rehearsals prior to the presentations. This year’s cantata includes many familiar Christmas carols. If you are interested in joining us this year, please let Paula know as soon as possible (kummerps@gmail.com).  Choir books and CDs will be ordered next week.

GOSPEL & GOODIES SUNDAY….. COMING SOON!

Make plans to invite your friends and family to join you for worship on Sunday, August 27th at 9:00 am. An invitation is being extended to the members of Shepherd King to join usas we “Gather at the River” to sing of God’s “Amazing Grace” “Soon and Very Soon” and we share “A Closer Walk with Thee.”  “What a Fellowship” will be experienced “When Those Saints Go Marching In!” Those are just a few of our favorite Gospel songs but there will be many others included. This worship is an official warm up for a Congregational Gospel Sing at some of our local assisted living facilities in September. After the August 27th Worship, goodies will be served too!

Looking forward to our mountain top experiences together!
